MGT201A Project Management
National Geographic – Inside Rio Carnaval
Available at: https://youtu.be/xgaVj0wSw2A
This video goes behind the scenes of one of the most popular events in the world – Rio Carnaval. Mainly from the perspective of Syd Carvalho, an experienced carnaval designer and project manager, we get a glimpse into what it can be like managing and coordinating such a project. From S yd’s perspective, t he as si gnment requires you to read this case report and search it for two items:
- The positives in this project (what went well from a project management perspective)
- The setbacks in this project (challenges and setbacks from a project management perspective)
There are several project management topics at play here (i.e. chartering projects, organizational culture and structure, scope planning, risk management, stakeholder management, time & scheduling management, etc).
You are not required to make any recommendations for improvement. Rather, you are reading the report to simply identify, list and discuss the positives and setbacks. Two (2) positives and two (2) setbacks are to be identified and detailed. Each positive or setback is detailed in 2 paragraphs where you identify the issue, why you think it went right (or wrong) and use references from the literature that discuss this weakness or strength in projects (at least 2 unique sources per topic). For example , if you identify that the budget for this project was exceeded, you will identify the cost overrun and cite references that discuss cost overruns being a common problem in projects. Some positives and setbacks are clear as they are easy to see, while others may be implied and will need you to think critically and make conclusions about those strengths or weaknesses.
The assignment takes the form of a report with the specified headings in the summary above –
Brief introduction (2 – 3 sentences)
Body – 2 positives (2 paragraphs each)
2 setbacks/challenges (2 paragraphs each)
Conclusion (2 – 3 sentences)
*The 750 word count applies only to the body (2 positives and 2 setbacks)
The purpose of the report is to assess your ability to read a project case report, identify project management issues, and make reference to supporting project management literature on the topic.
